Day 05: Trek to the Herrligkoffer Nanga Parbat Base Camp (South Face)
On this Day
Today, after breakfast, we begin our trip from Tarashing (2911m) village, gently ascending to the Tarashing Glacier lateral moraine on the north border and crossing the glacier on a trail that leads up to the pleasant valley past Rupal village. The trail gradually ascends through Rupal Valley's lush fields, following the valley's north side up a narrow green valley, through groves of willow, poplar, and juniper, then passing a small lake and rounding a corner of the Bazhin camp, flat, green meadows between the lateral moraine of the Bazhin Glacier and the mountain. Ahead stands the massive ice wall of Nanga Parbat's east face.
This is an ideal camping with pure spring water and a wood full of birds. Herrligkoffer base camp (3550m) is a magnificent, but much-utilized, meadow at the east border of the Bazhin Glacier.
The campground is named after Dr. Karl M. Herrligkoffer, who led eight German trips to Nanga Parbat, including the first successful mission in 1953. A several-hour side trek up this ablation valley brings you to a place on the moraine immediately above the Bazhin Glacier and across from the summit's icefall. Overnight camping in the Herrligkoffer Nanga Parbat base camp.
Day 06: Trek to Shaigiri
On this Day
After breakfast, cross the Bazhin Glacier via a trail in one hour along a donkey path. Local shepherds come and go frequently, so you can follow their path or theirs, but be careful because there will be many hidden crevasses and you can hear the voice of underground water flowing, so walk slowly and don't stop at the Bazhin glacier.
From the summit of the western lateral moraine, one can see a large green meadow called Latboh (3530m). Latboh is also known as Tupp Meadows because it resembles a Tupp, which was most likely the bed of a lake. Horses, sheep, and goats graze in the middle. Summer locals churn butter in goatskins and spin sheep fleece while sitting and chatting with tourists, offering them bread and buttermilk.
Further, two hours brings you around the end of a second moraine, with a lake on top. Essentially, this Lake is less usually visited and has no name, and it stands at the foot of Nanga Parbat, so that is why we call it a name. Nanga Parbat Lake to another broad field, Latboi (meaning stony place), also known as the second base camp, with a summer settlement on one side; from here, the path gently climbs over some moraine before following the north bank of the river through the woods to Shaigiri (meaning a white stone in Shina), 30 minutes away. This is an excellent campground at 3660 meters, with fresh water, firewood, and stunning views of Nanga Parbat's south face. Overnight camping at Shaigiri.

Overview – Rupal Peak Climbing Expedition
In Pakistan’s Northern Areas, the Rupal Peak Climbing Expedition offers an enthralling voyage into the heart of the Himalayan environment. Located in the shadow of Nanga Parbat’s famous Rupal Face, on the southern edge of the Rupal Valley, Rupal Peak is a gratifying and alluring challenge. As an introduction to high-altitude mountaineering in the Asian mountains, Rupal Peak is a beacon for climbers, unlike its more famous neighbors, the daunting Rupal Face and the Mazeno Wall. Its ascent usually consists of negotiating snow slopes with little pockets of ice in between, making it a perfect training ground for climbers who want to reach higher altitudes.
Rupal Peak was first ascended in 1964, and since then, a constant stream of intrepid travelers has been keen to reach the peak. The summit offers climbers a sense of seclusion and pristine wilderness because, in contrast to other Himalayan giants, it is still relatively seldom visited despite its remarkable height and distinctive beauty. The preferred route to Rupal Peak is the Western one, renowned for its low objective risks and easy approach. This route guarantees a strenuous but manageable ascent, rewarding climbers with stunning views of the surrounding Rupal Valley, the glacier-fed Rupal River to the north, and the far-off peaks of Laila and Shaigiri to the west. It also includes short portions of WI3 ice climbing.
The journey to Rupal Peak is a cultural and scenic trip and a physical struggle. Climbers set off on a journey that immerses them in the rich traditions of the local communities and exposes them to the raw, untamed grandeur of the Himalayan region, beginning at Tarashing village, the gateway to the Rupal Valley. Rupal Peak offers an incredible experience that blends the draw of discovery with the peace of isolated mountain isolation, whether one climbs its slopes for the excitement of reaching a peak rich in climbing history or just to take in the breathtaking views from its top.
