Itinerary – Pamir Yak Safari
The itinerary for the Pamir Yak Safari is given below.
Day 02: Kalaikhumb to Khorog
On this Day
Distance: 260 km
Duration: 7-8 hrs
From Kalaikhumb, we drive to Khorog along the Pianj River. We arrived in Gorno-Badakshan Autonomous Oblast's (GBAO) capital late in the evening and rested.
Day 03: Khorog to Kara Jylga
On this Day
Altitude: 3980 m
Distance: 401 km
Duration: 7-8 hrs
We meet the guide in the morning and head to Khorog's small bazaar to shop and prepare for our Pamir Mountain climb. Then we leave Khorog and drive via the famed Pamir Highway M41, the world's second-highest highway, which was completed in 1931 across a Tibetan-plateau-style high-altitude landscape. Driving this day, we pass Koi Tezek Pass (4272mh), then turn west to drive up Bulunkul and YashilKul lakes. The scenery around these lakes is beautiful and appealing to all visitors, and you will have time to walk around and take a short hike for photo opportunities. After having a picnic lunch near the lake, we drive to Kara Jylga for a nomadic summer pasture. The Eastern Pamirs have been populated by nomadic ethnic Kyrgyz since the 17th century.
Traditional architecture is beautifully portrayed by yurts, transportable habitations made of felt on an inventive wooden frame, with the interior decorating bearing testament to the owners' wealth and talent.
Handcrafted items are made from felt and wool. The area also has precise stones, like as rubies and emeralds, which are sometimes used in local handicrafts. You will take time to explore semi-nomadic pastoral life, speak with herders' families, sample local cuisine, and overnight in a Yurt Camp.
Day 04: YAK Riding Day - Kara Jylga to Kara Dong
On this Day
Altitude: 4135 m
Duration: 6-8 hrs
The yak trip will take us through the untouched lunar environment of towering mountains and huge plateaus to Kara Jylga. The Eastern Pamirs have been inhabited by nomadic ethnic Kyrgyz since the 17th century. Traditional architecture is beautifully portrayed by yurts, transportable habitations made of felt on an inventive wooden frame, with the interior decorating bearing testament to the owners' wealth and talent.
Following the customary breakfast in the Yurt camp, we will arrange our luggage and begin our Yak ride from Kara Jylga to Kara Dong.
We ride to the west of a high mountain plateau to see the glacial and breathtakingly gorgeous Chakan kul Lake. Despite its moniker ("Small Lake"), throughout most of the year, the sunny skies and pure air (4135m) give it a translucent azure hue. Picnic at lunchtime; after a snack, continue riding to Small Lake. Arrive at Small Lake after a 20/22km ride on the Yak; the Yak owner and local guide will take care of camping and local soup for dinner.
Day 05: Kara Dong, Small Lake to Kara Jylga, with a stop at Zor Kul Lake
On this Day
After breakfast, we will continue to ride the Yak as far as we can along the muddy road to Zorkul Lake. Walking through this area, you may witness Afghanistan's gorgeous northern wall, the Hindukush, and the fantastic Zor Kul Lake.
After exploring Zor Kul Lake, we return to Kara Jylga summer pastures and stay in a nomadic herder's tent.
Day 06: Kara Jylga to Khorog
On this Day
Distance: 368 km
Duration: 6-8 hrs
After breakfast, we go through the Pamir Highway to Khorog city.
Day 07: Khorog to Kalaikhumb
On this Day
Distance: 260 km
Duration: 6-7 hrs
Today we set off in Kalai Khumb and drove back through lovely scenery. The road connects to the Pianj River, which marks the border with Afghanistan. The contrast across the river valley is significant; Tajikistan is definitely an impoverished country, yet in general, roads are cemented and buildings are wired for power. The scene is much more dramatic just 100 metres distant, as if the river represented not just a physical boundary but also a step back in time.
Day 08: Kalaikhumb to Dushanbe
On this Day
Distance: 360 km
Duration: 8-9 hrs
Today, we drove to Dushanbe, passing through magnificent countryside and interesting settlements along the way. This area is a tad more conservative, with many men sporting beards and women wearing traditional attire . Upon arrival, our team will transfer you to your pre-arranged accommodations.

Overview – Pamir Yak Safari
The Yak Safari is an incredible journey through the wild, inaccessible regions of the Eastern Pamirs, where towering mountains, huge plateaus, and pure lakes create a stunning and unspoiled setting. This walk takes you deep into the heart of Kyrgyz nomadic culture, providing an authentic cultural experience with the option to stay in traditional yurts—mobile dwellings made of felt and timber frames that represent the wealth and expertise of the owners.
The tour takes you to Zor Kul Lake, a breathtaking high-altitude lake at 3,600 meters. Zor Kul, which stretches over 20 kilometers, is situated on Tajikistan’s border and offers views of the majestic northern wall of the Hindu Kush in Afghanistan. Along the trip, you will stop at Kok Jigit Lake, a lovely location surrounded by the rocky splendor of the Pamirs.
The region has a rich history, beginning with the British explorer Lieutenant Woods’ visit to the source of the Pyanj River in 1842, establishing the area’s importance. Walking along historic trails, you’ll connect with the land’s deep cultural roots, observe nomadic life, and see some of the world’s most distant and stunning landscapes.
