Itinerary – Pamir Highway Trip
The itinerary for the Pamir Highway Trip is given below.
Day 02: Drive Dushanbe to Kalai-Khumb
On this Day
Distance: 370 km
After breakfast, we depart for the Pamirs via the M41 highway. Our journey will take us through the Tawildara settlement and the Khaburabad pass (3252 meters). If the route through the pass is not available, we will drive through the Kulyab region. People here are more traditional and prefer local dress styles, yet this has no bearing on their unwavering hospitality. As soon as we cross the Khaburabad mountain pass into Kalai-Khum, the scenery and people change again. People residing here are known as Badakhshanis, and they speak their language. Kalai-Khumb is situated on the Panj River, a major tributary of the renowned Amudarya (Oxus) River. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 03: Drive Kalai-Khumb to Khorog
On this Day
Distance: 240 km
Breakfast in the hotel. After breakfast, we meet our guide and driver to continue our tour. Today's journey will follow the Panj River. We will be observing the Afghan border during the trip. Khorog is the administrative center of the Pamir region, located deep in the valley at the confluence of the Panj and Ghunt rivers and surrounded by mountain peaks.
Upon arrival in Khorog, check into a hotel and rest.
Day 04: Drive Khorog to Ishkashim
On this Day
Distance: 120 km
Garm Chashma, a prominent mineral hot spring, is located only 45 kilometers from Khorog. And it will be our first stop after leaving Khorog.
The route to Ishkashim will be smooth and short. Ishkashim is a small village at the mouth of the Wakhan corridor, where the 19th-century Great Game concluded. Continue up the north bank of the river, with breathtaking views of the Pamirs to the left and the Hindu Kush to the right; a number of the peaks in view are higher than 6,000 meters. If we're lucky enough to get to Ishkashim on Saturday, we'll visit the cross-border Tajik-Afghan bazaar on the Afghan side. We do not need an Afghan visa to enter the market! Stay overnight at the Ishkashim guesthouse. Dinner and overnight.
Day 05: Ishkashim to Langar
On this Day
Distance: 140 km
After breakfast, we will leave Ishkashim and halt at another site on our map, Langar village. On our way from Ishkashim to Langar, we will stop by the old Kah-Kaha stronghold in Namadgut village and the museum of Muborak-kadami Vakhani (a local Sufi thinker, theologian, poet, and traveler who died in 1910). A stone pillar with a hole near his house is where he used to calculate a solar calendar. There is also a nearby residence with inscriptions and decorations created by the scholar.
Another visit will be to the Buddhist Stupa in Vrang village, the sacred hot springs of Bibi Fatima Zahra, and the remnants of the Yamchun fortification from the fourth century BC. On arrival in Langar, stay at the guesthouse for dinner and sleep.
Day 06: Langar - Burunkul - Murgab
On this Day
Distance: 230 km
In the morning, we will hike a little distance beyond Langar hamlet to witness the petroglyphs cut into the rock, which represent mountain goats, caravans, horse riders, and the Ismaili hand.
After lunch, we drive north across the Khargush Pass (4344m) to Yashilkul Lake. As we ascend higher into the Pamirs, the landscape and locals' appearances alter. We've already left behind the verdant valleys of the Wakhan and Pamiri tribes. The landscape here is becoming desolate and stony. This region is home to nomadic Kyrgyz herders. Upon landing in Murgab, stay at the simple hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Day 07: Murghab - Ak Baital pass - Tokhtamysh pass - Savnov
On this Day
Distance: 300 km
As we go to the Ak Baital Pass (The White Horse Pass 4655m), we are treated to breathtaking views of mountains and glaciers. This is the highest pass in the former USSR, the true "Roof of the World," and a hidden gem in this vast parched country.
On the Barchidev side of the main road, continue to the left. The route traveled through the Jalang valley, passing Tokhtamysh and Kudara. A picnic is on the way. We'll stop at yurts along the way. Then we will descend to the famed and magnificent Bartang Gorge. Accommodation in a homestay.
Day 08: Savnov to Khichez
On this Day
Distance: 150 km
Breakfast. Before leaving, take in the stunning panorama of Lyapnazar Peak (5989 m). Transfer to the settlement of Khichez on Bartang Lake. When we arrive in Khichez village, located in the Bartang Valley, we will explore the area by wandering around the beautiful Khichez valley. Stay overnight at the homestay.
Day 09: One-day trek to Jizev - Kichez
On this Day
The 7-hour trip to Jizev begins after passing one bridge on the Bartang River, right outside Bhagoo Village. The hike is primarily gentle uphill for around 8 kilometers. The first houses in Jizev are reached after around 5 kilometers. The lush greenery, the gnarled trees, the lakes, and the ever-changing river - sometimes roaring with activity, sometimes limpid and blue - all contribute to a unique tranquil ambiance, suitable for a brief respite with little physical effort. This walking path took you through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Pamirs, including lakes and rivers. Return to Khichez. Stay overnight at the homestay.
Day 10: Khichez - Rushan - Kalai-Khumb
On this Day
Transfer to the town of Kalaihumb. Lunch along the route; dinner at the guesthouse. You may notice more traditional attitudes toward local dress styles and beards, but the friendliness is just as kind. Visiting the historic settlement of Karon. The remains of the city of Karon are located 1 km east of the town of Ruzvai, at an elevation of 1700 m above sea level, on the top of Zogik mountain in the Darvaz region of GBAO. Stay overnight at the hotel.
Day 11: Kalai-Khumb to Dushanbe
On this Day
Distance: 280 km
Drive to Dushanbe via the Khobu-Robot pass (3252 m). The journey will take you through the heart of Badagshon's mountain range, where you may experience the most stunning views. Lunch is on the way. Dinner at the Oriental Tearoom. Stay overnight at the hotel.
Day 12: Fly to home country
Transfer to the International Airport. Departure from Dushanbe.
