Kalash Valley Festival (2024-25) – 15 Days
Kalash valley festival is a an amazing cultural experience in the Hindukush mountain ranges of Pakistan. UNESCO listed Kalash culture as “Intangible Cultural Heritage” in November 2018. The decision was announced during the 13th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee meeting organised in Mauritius.

Overview – Kalash Valley Festival
Kalash Valley Festival refers to the festivals celebrated by the kalashi people in the Kalash valley of Pakistan. There are three major festivals celebrated in the valley. Chilam Joshi festival is a religious event of the kalashi people which is celebrated in the spring season on 13th-15th of each year. Phool Festival is celebrated on the 20th-25th September. Choimos festival is celebrated on the 18th-21 December each year.
Kalash Valley Festival is celebrated by the tens of young people and plenty of girls dancing and singing on the beats of the traditional drums. The women wear exotic dresses with the traditional cap made of feathers and dance separately in circles.
The history of Kalash valley festivals dates back to 3rd century BC, when Alexandar the great and his troops left his injured pupil in the remote mountainous Hindu Kush range of known as kalash valley in Pakistan.
The Kalasha people have attracted a lot of attention of historians and anthropologists from all over the world. Numerous theories were presented, several DNA tests were made, which means the actual origin of the tribe remained unknown. Most of them agreed on the fact that the people have European bloodline.
If you are a foreigner and your flights lands in Islamabad. Either you can travel by road to chirtal town, which takes about 12-14 hours or you can take a one hour flight from Islamabad. Once, you reach chitral you will have to then hire a 4 x 4 jeep for Kalash Valley, which is about a 40 km long off road drive from chitral town.
The valleys are beautiful and there are three main valleys one should explore, Bumburet, Rumber ad Birir. Among these three, Bumburet is the most commercialized one, with a small market that consists of very few shops and hotel. If you are travelling while any of the kalash valley festival is happening, you will find yourself a different side of Pakistan.
