Itinerary – Gree An Trek

The itinerary for Gree An Trek is given below.

Travel from Islamabad to the breathtaking Chitral Valley via the Swat Motorway. After a quick pause at the Swat Motorway Rest Area, continue driving along the N-45 highway, taking in the natural beauty of the surrounding environment. You will pass through the magnificent Lowari Tunnel on your way to Chitral. Finally, if arrive in Chitral Valley, you may immerse yourself in its rich cultural legacy and breathtaking scenery. The estimated travel time from Islamabad to Chitral is around 9 to 10 hours. Explore Chitral's attractions, including the Shahi Mosque, Shahi Qila, the Polo Ground, Governor Cottage, and the Chitral Museum.

To get to Guru village in the magnificent Birir valley from Chitral, travel around 45 kilometers, which takes about two hours. The drive offers breathtaking views of beautiful mountains and lush landscapes, creating a unique experience. The trek to Guru village showcases the region's natural beauty and rustic appeal. Upon arrival, you will be met by the tranquil surroundings and friendly inhabitants, who will give you an insight into the traditional way of life in this beautiful valley.

Walk up the valley for 20 minutes along Birir Gol to Bishala, then cross the river. A Bashali can be discovered immediately below the footbridge on the true left bank. Continue for 10 minutes up the true left bank to Gaskuru. Turn north and follow a side valley for 15 minutes until you reach the trail divide. There are two trails leading from here to the pass. Straight ahead, up a stony hill with a few trees, is a steeper but shorter herder's trail. Instead, take the route to the right, where you'll find a little black-walled gorge (tang in Persian) with towering rock walls that provide morning shade. The road to the pass is generally dry, so fill up at the canal before heading up the canyon. 1½ to 2¼ hours on the relentlessly steep and rocky terrain. The canyon gradually opens as the trail winds past scattered oaks, hollies, pines, cedars, and junipers. Water can be found halfway up, although it is unreliable. As you approach an open grazing area with a lot of deadwood, the steepness diminishes.

The steeper herder's trail intersects the George trail here. (When descending from the pass to Birir, the herders' track may be clearly seen across the mountainside. The path down into the gorge is less evident, but it heads east or left. The pass is first visible from the grazing area's head.
Turn northeast (right) and climb switchbacks of loose, steep rock among Chilghoza pines for 45 minutes to an hour to the pass. Green An (3060m) provides superb views of Tirich Mir and Noshaq to the north, while Istor-o-Nal is hidden behind Tirich Mir.

The descent leads to Ghumbak, a Muslim community in Bumboret. Descend through the woods along the actual side of a gully (which is snowy early in the season but dry later). The trail traverses, then swiftly recrosses, the valley where the first side stream enters from the east. Water is available from a secondary creek further down. Gumbak (3130m) can be reached in 1-12 to 2 hours.

Bumboret has a clear view of the passage. It is situated to the east of the forested low point on the ridge, where the trees meet the Gorimun Zom rock. The darker peak to the west of the pass is known as Bachay Maddir or Onsets.

After descending, you'll come in Ghumbak, a Muslim village in the Bumboret Valley. The route winds through a woody region on the real side of a snowy gully before crossing the valley where the first side stream arrives from the east. A subsidiary brook provides water farther down. It takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to go to Ghumbak, which is at an elevation of 3130 meters. Bumboret provides a clear perspective of the passage to the east of the ridge's wooded low point, where the trees meet the Gorimun Zom rock.

The travel to Chitral is 45 kilometers from Bumboret and takes around 1.5 hours. The route, although hilly and dirt-covered, provides spectacular vistas and is well worth the journey. As you travel the twisting route, the rich greenery of the valleys and the towering peaks of the surrounding mountains will meet you. Chitral, with its rich tradition and natural beauty, awaits after the journey, offering an unforgettable adventure.

On this day

Begin your exploration by visiting the Shahi Mosque and Shahi Qila, two of the city's most renowned attractions. The mosque is recognized for its exquisite construction, and the Qila (fort) provides insight into Chitral's rich past. Don't miss the bustling bazaars, where you may buy traditional handicrafts and souvenirs.

The travel from Chitral to Islamabad usually takes 9 to 10 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. The journey is picturesque, traversing through high terrain and providing stunning vistas along the way. Make sure to stop in any of the attractive villages and towns along the way, such as Dir and Swat, to enjoy the region's natural splendor. Once in Islamabad, you may visit the city's various attractions, such as the Faisal Mosque, Daman-e-Koh, and Lok Virsa Museum.

We also have a contingency day in your travel arrangements in the event of unanticipated delays. This entails setting aside an additional day for your vacation so that you may change your itinerary if necessary. This might be due to inclement weather, road closures, or unforeseen occurrences during your route. This extra day helps address such circumstances without significantly disrupting your travel plans, resulting in a smoother and more pleasurable vacation overall.

The hike begins with a laborious ascent through dense trees and rugged terrain, eventually rising to Gree An’s summit. Trekkers who reach the pass are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding area, including the magnificent Hindukush Peaks. Trekkers descend the opposite side of Gree An, passing through magnificent forests and into the picturesque towns of Bumboret. Visitors can immerse themselves in the culture and customs of the Kalash people, a distinct indigenous community known for their vibrant festivals, vivid clothing, and unique way of life. Exploring these villages and meeting the Kalash people helps you to have a deep insight into their rich cultural heritage.

The Gree An combines natural wonders, physical challenges, and cultural immersion.
