Overview – Chitral to Dir (Thallo Pass)
The trek from Chitral to Dir via Thallo Pass is a captivating excursion that takes you through stunning scenery and rich cultural history. Thallo Pass, at an elevation of 1,4000 feet, connects Upper Panjkora, Kohistan Dir (Kumrat Valley), and Chitral. This old route has been used by the Dardic tribe for centuries, demonstrating their strong connection to the land.
As you go along this picturesque trail, you’ll come across huge green meadows, peaceful grazing fields, and breathtaking lakes including Shahzor Lake, Zaigi Chatt Lake, Thallo Lake, Kak Lake, and Kool Lake. The route is punctuated by flowing waterfalls and spectacular glaciers, notably the stunning Thallo Glacier, which provides a visual feast at every turn.
The vivid wildflower displays along the Thallo Pass trail are one of its most charming aspects. During the summer months, the Kohistan Dir area, notably around Ghorshai Banda and Shahzor Banda, transforms into a kaleidoscope of hues as wildflowers blossom abundantly. This phenomenon arises because cattle usually arrive later in the season, enabling flowers to bloom and flourish.
Historically, Thallo Pass has served as both a path for pastoralists and a strategic escape for the Dardic people during region-wide wars. Its rich history, combined with its natural beauty, make the journey from Chitral to Dir via Thallo Pass a unique experience, linking you to both the breathtaking scenery and the resilient spirit of the residents.
