Itinerary – Pamir Wakhan Cycling Tour
The itinerary for the Pamir Wakhan Cycling Tour is given below.
Day 02: Dushanbe to Kalaikhumb
On this Day
Distance: 360 km
Duration: 9-10 hrs
We set out east towards the Pamirs, hoping to cover ground before arriving at Kalaikhumb. Despite having another long day on the road, we are quickly diverted by the stunning countryside and interesting settlements along the way. This area is a tad more conservative, with many men sporting beards and women wearing traditional attire. We pass the Shurabod Pass (2200 meters) and arrive at Kalaikhumb in the early evening. Lunch is on the way. Dinner and stay at the guest house.
Day 03: Kalaikhumb to Khorog
On this Day
Distance: 260 km
Duration: 7-8 hrs
We leave Kalaikhumb and travel to Khorog along the Pianj River, which borders Afghanistan. The people of Badakhshani are not Tajiks, but rather a collection of several tribal groupings. They speak their languages, and their religion is not Sunni Islam, but Agha Khan's Ismailism. Ismaili attitudes and dress are far more liberal than those of their Sunni neighbors just across the pass. We are staying in relative luxury tonight after arriving in Gorno-Badakshan Autonomous Oblast's (GBAO) capital.
After shopping for food and bike equipment, bicycles with luggage will be delivered to Khorog via bus track.
Day 04: Begin cycling from Khorog to Wer village
On this Day
Altitude: 2900 m
Distance: 62 km
After breakfast at the homestay, begin your first day riding along the Gunt River over asphalt roads and picturesque villages. People are quite friendly. Our car and guide will accompany you. A quick snack on the road. Arrival at Wer Village. Camping.
Day 05: Cycling from Wer to Jelondy
On this Day
Altitude: 3400 m
Distance: 72 km
After breakfast, cycle to Jelondy, a small settlement. The car will follow you. Lunch or snack on the road. Arrival in Jelondy. Visit Jelondy sanatorium and its hot springs. Camping near the sanatorium, or if there are any spare rooms, staying overnight at the sanatorium.
Day 06: Cycling from Jelondy to Bulung Kul
On this Day
Altitude: 3700 m
Distance: 70 km
After breakfast, we continue the cycling excursion to Bulung Kul hamlet via the Khargushi Pass (4333m), accompanied by our guide and driver. On this excursion, we leave the verdant valley of the Shugnan Valley and encounter a rocky, desolate, yet stunning region. The road combines asphalt and gravel until Bulung Kul settlement. Bulung Kul is a tiny settlement located near the Bulung Kul Lake. Bulung Kul village's population is entirely Pamiri. Picnic or snack on the way.
Short hike around Bulung Kul Lake.
Day 07: Cycling from Bulung Kul to Khargush Wakhan valley
On this Day
Altitude: 3800 m
Distance: 58 km
Breakfast at the homestay and then cycling towards the Wakhan corridor. From here, the route combines with gravel and asphalt. We cross the Chokur Kul Lake. Cycling via the 4344m-high Khargush Pass. A quick snack on the road. In Khargush, there is a checkpoint with military border guides. Checkpoint formalities. Arrival in Khargush. There are other Pamiri shepherds' cottages and camping areas a little further from the little village. Camping in a tent.
Day 08: Cycling from Khargush to Langar
On this Day
Altitude: 270 m
Distance: 50 km
After breakfast at the camp, cycle towards Langar via the high highlands, the Pamir River, and the Afghan border. On the other side of the river, you can observe Afghan shepherds' houses, as well as shepherds traveling from one neighbor to another by horse, donkey, camel, or foot. Short bite on the road to Langar. Dinner and sleep at the homestay.
Day 09: Cycling from Langar to Yamchun/Ptup
On this Day
Altitude: 2700 m
Distance: 58 km
After breakfast, cycle towards Yamchung, stopping at Suffi Mubarak Kadam Museum, Stone Solar Calendar at Yamg, Yamchung Fortress, and Bibi Fatima Hot Spring. Picnic somewhere along the way, then cycle to Ptup hamlet, 4 kilometers from Yamchun, to spend the night at a homestay. Dinner at the homestay.
Day 10: Cycling from Yamchun/Ptup to Ishakshim center
On this Day
Altitude: 2400 m
Distance: 67 km
After breakfast, cycle towards Ishakshim. Visit the AVG sanatorium, which is well-known for its healing powers. Visit some shrines, museums, and the Qakha Fort in Namadgut village. On the way, we had a short picnic. This remarkable edifice, built on a naturally formed granite platform, dates back to the Kushan era of the third century. Please keep in mind that the fort is still utilized by local Tajik military forces on occasion, so authorization from the local authorities is required for the excursion. If we can come when the military is in place, please exercise extreme caution and only take images with permission.
Arrive at the Ishkashim center. Ishkashim may be the regional center, yet it remains a huge village. Ishkashim has little to offer in terms of sights and activities. Picnic on the way, dinner, and an overnight stay at the Ishkashim guesthouse.
Day 11: Cycling from Ishkashim town to Garm Chasma
On this Day
Altitude: 2500 m
Distance: 68 km
After breakfast, cycle towards Garm Chashma. We proceed through regional gem mines indicated by Marco Polo in his account of the 'Mt Shugnon region'. The most famous mine is Koh-i-Lal ruby mine, which can be seen from the road. Hot mineral springs Garm-Chashma (Tajik for "Hot Spring") is located at an elevation of 2325 meters above sea level on the western side of the Shahdara ridge in the middle stages of the Garm-Chashma River in Tajikistan's Ishkashim area of the Gorno-Badahschan Autonomous area. There are several natural basins on the travertine hill, each with a water mirror ranging in size from 0.5 to 20 square meters and a depth of half a meter. They are filled with hot water turquoise containing iron, aluminum, magnesium, strontium, fluorine, and other elements. The water also has a high concentration of hydrogen sulphide (170 milligrams per liter), silicic acid (135 milligrams per liter), and carbonic acid (381 milligrams per liter). The water temperature near the griffins' outflow on the surface is approximately +62 degrees Celsius. The water temperature in the "pool" ranges from +38 to +50 degrees Celsius, depending on the source's vicinity. The reservoir's outside walls provide a pleasant effect by highlighting white stalactites painted in a variety of hues to disguise their multicolored algae. The bottom of the largest "pool" is covered in sediments of thin, soft calcium carbonate mixed with sulfur. Lunch/snacks on the road, dinner, and overnight stay in Garm Chashma.
Day 12: Cycling from Garm Chashma to Khorog
On this Day
Altitude 2000 m
Distance: 51 km
Breakfast at the homestay in Garm Chashma after cycling to Khorog. Last days of cycling. A picnic is on the way. Arrival in Khorog. Accommodation at Hotel

Overview – Pamir Wakhan Cycling Tour
The Pamir Wakhan Cycling Trip is an unforgettable journey through two of the world’s most remote and breathtaking regions: the Pamir Mountains and the Wakhan Corridor. Known as the “Roof of the World,” the Pamirs provide stunning high-altitude cycling across difficult terrain, snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes, and traditional mountain communities. This adventurous adventure takes you across Tajikistan and Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor, providing a unique opportunity to discover one of the world’s least-visited destinations.
Cyclists will confront the difficulty of traversing high-altitude roads that frequently reach 4,000 meters, passing through magnificent mountain scenery and different environments that include glaciers, valleys, and ancient trade routes. The excursion provides an intriguing view into the region’s cultures, as you encounter native Tajik, Wakhi, and Pamiri people whose traditional way of life is still strongly rooted in these distant highlands.
The tour is intended for experienced cyclists because it includes long rides across tough terrain at high altitudes with daily climbs and descents. Camping, modest guesthouses, and stays with local families all offer an authentic experience in this wild, unspoiled setting. The greatest time to go on this adventure is from late spring to early autumn when the weather is more conducive to riding. The Cycling Tour is more than simply a physical challenge; it’s an unforgettable trip that includes rare cultural insights, breathtaking natural beauty, and the exhilaration of cycling on the Roof of the World.
