Pioneer Books
Pioneer Books is regarded as a historical landmark in Karachi, having been established in the 1940s, before to India/Pakistan partition. Zafar Hossein, the shop owner, is a delight to speak with and will gladly assist you with your book search.
On the ground floor, they have both fiction and legal literature. On the first floor, they store additional books, paintings, dust, and heaps of nostalgia.
Weekly Sunday Book Fair at Frere Hall
Discover new literature under the shadows of the old Frere Hall. There’s a wide range of books available, including English, Urdu, and Sindhi. Feel free to haggle; the booksellers will drop the price.
The fair is open on most Sundays, however, it closes on some weeks due to the weather (by which I mean Karachi’s once-a-year Monsoon downpour) or a festival taking place on the hall grounds.
Mr. Old Books
Mr Old Books is located near Karachi’s Khadda Market. It is well-stocked and priced reasonably. The bookstore includes a good selection of Urdu novels, as well as Western literature publications. They also have a fantastic selection of history and current events literature. The best part about this bookstore is that the shopkeepers take down book orders along with the customer’s contact information, and when the books arrive, they call the clients to let them know that their chosen book is now available in the store.
