Overview – Pamir Culture Tour

Central Asia has been described as a place of mixed civilizations and religions. Before the arrival of Islam, the land of current Tajikistan was home to a variety of religions and cultures. Many merchants, traders, missionaries, and pilgrims brought new aspects of religions, civilizations, and traditions to Asia and Europe along the Great Silk Road, which ran across Central Asia. This facilitated the sharing of cultural and religious values among ethnic groupings.

This tour focuses on the historical and cultural heritage of one of Islam’s major branches: the Ismailis. The Ismailis were always surrounded by secrets and stories, and they preferred to reside in the most secluded regions, such as Alamut Fortress and the High Pamirs.  To achieve their religious and political objectives, the Ismailis promoted intellectual, scientific, creative, and entrepreneurial activity. Thus, by participating in the tour, we will have the opportunity to travel to the realm of old civilizations and traditions, where we will visit numerous sacred sites, ancient fortifications, and thermal and live springs surrounded by magnificent landscapes and high mountains.

Our journey leads us to long-abandoned Silk Road fortifications and Buddhist ruins, remnants of the region’s important location on trade routes, and we encounter locals along the way. A difficult voyage through an enigmatic region—exciting is an understatement.
