Day 02: Drive Kalai-Khumb to Khorog
On this Day
Distance: 250 km, 8-10 hours
Leaving Kalai-Khumb (Darvaz) and going to Khorog. A short halt at Porshinev at the monument to Nasir Khusraw, a prominent Persian poet and Muslim scholar.
Khorog City Tour: Botanical Garden, Historical Museum, City Park, and Visitor Information Center. Stay overnight in Khorog in a hotel or a guesthouse. 250 km.
During the day, altitudes above sea level range from 1295 m in Kalaikhumb to 2100 m in Khorog.
Day 03: Khorog - Wakhan Corridor
On this Day
Distance: 266 km, 10-12 hours
Khorog City Tour: Botanical Garden, Historical Museum, City Park, and Visitor Information Center. After traveling to Ishkashim. On the route, make a brief halt to relax in the Garm-Chashma hot springs and see the Kuhi La'l ruby mines in the distance. Driving to the Wakhan Valley. Visiting the remnants of Kah-Kaha and Yamchun fortifications, Bibi Fotima hot springs, pre-Islamic shrines, the Museum of Sufi Muboraki Wakhoni, a 19th-century astronomer and scholar, and walking to the Langar petroglyphs. Overnight in a guesthouse in Hisor village.
Altitudes above sea level for the day: the beginning of the day - 2100 m at Khorog; highest point - Yamchun 3200 m; end of the day - Langar 2800 m.
Day 04: Wakhan Corridor – Bulunkul Lake – Murghab
On this Day
Distance: 275 km, 10-12 hours
Driving to Bulunkul (the coldest place in Tajikistan) via Khargush Pass (4344 m) via the Pamir River. A 2-3 hour climb to the pass overlook (Panorama Ridge) provides a spectacular view of the entire Wakhan valley, both Tajik and Afghan. Drive to Yashilkul (Green) Lake to admire its beauty. Driving to Alichur via Sasykul and Tuzkul lakes to see and appreciate the magnificent landscape. In the afternoon, continue traveling to Murghab. Stay overnight in Murgab at a guesthouse or hotel.
During the day, altitudes above sea level ranged from Langar (2800 m) at the start of the day to Murgab (3630 m) at the conclusion.
Day 05: Murghab to Modian
On this Day
Day boating on the Murghab River along the Murghab-Madian Valley route allows you to see the Eastern Pamir landscape from a different perspective. In the evening, the drive returns to Murghab. Stay overnight in Murghab at a guesthouse or hotel.
During the day, the altitude above sea level is 3630 m Murghab at the beginning and 3500 m Modian at the finish.
Day 06:Drive Murghab to Karakul Village
On this Day
Distance: 210 km, 8-9 hours
Leaving Murghab and heading to Rangkul and Shorkul lakes. A good opportunity to see the rare Indian goose (Anser Indicus). In the afternoon, go to Tajikistan's largest lake, Karakul ('Black Lake'). Continue driving to Karakul village across the Pamir Highway's highest point, the Ak-Baital pass (4656 meters). A brief stay near the first Tsarist Russian military base in the Pamirs. In the afternoon, go hiking near Karakul Lake. Spend the night in Karakul village at a guesthouse or yurt.
Altitudes above sea level during the day: 3630 m in Murgab, 4656 m on Ak-Baital pass, and 3930 m in Karakul.
Day 07: Karakul – Sary Tash – Osh
On this Day
Distance: 294 km, Drive 8-10 hours
Departing Karakul for Sary-Tash, Kyrgyzstan's Alay valley. Following the discovery of the town of Sary-Tash, a brief stop was made to visit the Karaart geoglyphs (8th-3rd century BC). If there are no clouds on the horizon, enjoy the view from Lenin Peak (7134 m). Afternoon travel to Osh, where planes or alternative transit are available to Bishkek, Uzbekistan, or Khujand, Tajikistan (via Uzbekistan).
During the day, the altitude above sea level is 3930 m at Karakul, 3589 m on Taldik Pass, and 950 m in Osh.
