Overview – Gandhara Tour
Pakistan is rich in historical remnants dating back to the Stone Age and the British colonial era. Among its most revered are the Indus Valley Civilisation and the legendary Gandhara Civilisation, both known for their distinctive art. Gandhara, located in the ancient Peshawar valley, is the origin of Buddhist civilization and the birthplace of the renowned Gandharan art style. Pushkalavati, the capital of the Achaemenian Empire, saw the rise of a variety of kings, including the Mauryans, Indo-Greeks, Scythians, Parthians, and Kushans, as evidenced by inscriptions from the sixth century BC. Gandhara’s rule came to an end in 998 AD when it fell to the Ghaznavids. Remarkable archaeological sites such as Takht-i-Bahi, Shari Bahlol, and Taxila have provided a plethora of Gandharan art and artifacts, which are now on display in local and international museums, highlighting the region’s global cultural significance and significant impact.
