Overview – Mohenjo Daro Tour
Mohenjo-daro is a series of mounds and ruins located on the right bank of the Indus River in northern Sindh province, southern Pakistan. It is located on the flat alluvial plain of the Indus, approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Sukkur. The site contains the relics of one of the two major centers of the ancient Indus civilization (c. 2500-1700 BC), the other being Harappa, located about 400 miles (640 km) to the northwest in Pakistan’s Punjab state.
The name Mohenjo-daro is said to mean “the mound of the dead.” The archeological significance of the site was first acknowledged in 1922, one year after the discovery of Harappa. Subsequent excavations revealed that the mounds included the remains of the Indus civilization’s biggest city. Because of its size—about 3 miles (5 km) in the circuit—and the relative wealth of its monuments and treasures, the city is widely recognized as the capital of a large state. Its relationship with Harappa, however, is unclear—that is, whether the two towns were contemporaneous or if one city succeeded the other. Mohenjo-daro was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
