Overview – Changa Manga and Head Balloki Tour
Changa Manga is a man-made forest with a wildlife sanctuary located around 80 km southwest of Lahore. Changa Manga, formerly the world’s biggest man-made forest, is now renowned as “one of the oldest hand-planted forests in the world” and is home to a diverse range of flora and wildlife. The woodland is home to 14 animals, 50 birds, 6 reptiles, 2 amphibians, and 27 invertebrates. Thus, the forest is an important wildlife sanctuary in addition to generating lumber for the local business. The Changa Manga forest, named for two bandit brothers, was first established in 1866 by British foresters, and its trees were stripped to provide fuel and materials for the engines used in Northwestern railway networks. The robbers were a continual source of horror for the district’s “law-abiding citizens” in the nineteenth century, holding up and plundering any passing commerce. The bandits established a hideaway in the “secret heart” of the woodland where they hid from British forces. The authorities subsequently apprehended the thieves, who inspired the forest’s name. Balloki Headworks is a headworks on the River Ravi in the Punjab province of Pakistan that is primarily used for irrigation and flood control.
